Welcoming the elections in Iraq as an important development in its transition to full sovereignty, India on Friday hoped that peace and political stability would soon be established in that country and expressed its readiness to cooperate in reconstruction efforts.

"The elections held in Iraq on December 15 represent a significant step forward in the Iraqi political process," the External Affairs Ministry said in a statement in New Delhi.

The ministry said it was noteworthy that all sections of the Iraqi population participated in this election and it would lead to a more inclusive and broad-based council of representatives.

"The Indian government welcomes this important development in Iraq's transition to full sovereignty and democratic polity and hopes that peace and political stability will soon be established in Iraq. It wishes the people of Iraq success in their efforts towards nation-building and is ready to cooperate in the reconstruction of Iraq," it said.
