A suicide bomber slammed his explosive-laden vehicle into the main gate of the notorious prison Monday, causing several casualties. The US military has no immediate word about the incident.
Abu Ghraib abuse 'just for fun'
Late Saturday, insurgents launched a major attack on the compound by ramming two car bombs into gates, and followed it up with mortars and rocket-propelled grenades aimed at a US base inside the prison compound. At least 45 US soldiers and five prisoners were injured.
The two hour long gunfight ended only after the US prison guards called in helicopters and infantry reinforcements.
Most of the attackers escaped, and later the Iraqi wing of the Al Qaeda claimed responsibility for the attack.
The prison, some 20 km west of Baghdad, holds more than 3,000 detainees.
