Bolt, flies found in soft drink

October 12, 2004 23:30 IST

An official of the Sikkim Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday showed to the media in Gangtok two sealed bottles of popular soft drinks containing a bolt, a fly, ants and dirt.

"I am presenting these bottles before you as a social obligation. I want people to know through the press how dangerous it could be to go in for a soft drink in Gangtok," said Rakesh Somani, secretary, SCC.

Somani had recently held a similar press conference to show a bottle of a popular soft drink containing an insect.

He said the bottle he displayed earlier had been found in his own retail shop, but the two bottles displayed on Tuesday had been given to him by two different retailers of the town who had requested not to be named.

He said he had already written to the manufacturer, a multinational soft drinks company, drawing their attention to the shocking discovery, but had not received any response.

Somani said he would submit the bottles to the food division of the state's health department and leave it to the government to decide about the next course of action.
