Eleven states are asking their electorate to vote for or against gay marriage as part of their ballot initiatives, where state-based issues are listed on the same ballot as the Presidential vote.
Early results show that at least two of those states, Oklahoma and Kentucky, are in favor of banning gay marriage.
Both states are also expected to vote solidly along Republican party lines.
President Bush has pushed the cause of a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, which had become an emotive issue in the campaign.
Though Senator Kerry too has opposed gay marriage, he feels that instead of a constitutional amendment, it should left for the states to decide on whether or not to allow same sex marriages.
