Naval version of BrahMos test-fired
November 03, 2004 16:13 IST
BrahMos, the supersonic cruise missile jointly developed by India and Russia, was flight-tested on Wednesday off the Orissa coast, defence sources said.
The naval version of the missile was test-fired from the Indian navy's destroyer 'INS Rajput' at around 1118 IST, the sources said.
They said although BrahMos is essentially an anti-ship missile, it can also hit targets on land. The missile, which has multi-target capability and enjoys a maneuverable trajectory, can also be fired from a mobile platform on land.
BrahMos has a striking range of 290 km and weighs about 3 tonnes. It is eight-metre long and carries a conventional warhead weighing about 200 kg, the sources added.
