J&K CM's nephew held for links with militants

December 28, 2004 20:18 IST

Sarwar Mufti, nephew of Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed was on Tuesday arrested on charges of having links with militants and sent to Court Balwal Jail in Jammu, a senior police official said.

Sarwar, son of the Sayeed's brother Sharifuddin, was detained under the Public Safety Act for two years for allegedly arranging finances for funding militancy in the state, DIG (South Kashmir) Ravinder Kotwal told PTI.

The chief minister's nephew was selling gold, the proceeds of which were apparently used to finance militancy.

Sarwar had close ties with Fayaz Tala, a close associate of militant Javed Sipni who is accused of killing retired chief prosecuting officer Zulfikar Ali in Anantnag district in 2003, Kotwal added.
