ULFA rejects PM's offer of talks
December 10, 2004 01:17 IST
The United Liberation Front of Asom on Thursday rejected Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's offer of talks.
An email to the local media by a man claiming to be the ULFA chief, Paresh Barua, termed as "disappointing" the letter given by Singh to Jnanpith award winner Indira Goswami, who mediated between the outfit and the government.
The letter was "disappointing" as it put conditions and did not mention the question of sovereignty demanded by the outfit, the email said.
The email further said the offer was "self-contradictory" as the PM had first announced that he was ready for unconditional talks.
The ULFA thanked Goswami for her effort to negotiate between the two sides and bring about peace in Assam.
