The Mumbai Pune Express Highway was shut down on Wednesday after a landslide was reported in one section.
The incident happened at the National Highway junction (4) at the ghat section of the Mumbai corridor.
Deputy Project Manager Vishal Kadarkar of Elsamex-Shinde-IRB -- a joint venture company responsible for the maintenance of the highway -- told rediff.com: "The Mumbai corridor of the express highway is completely blocked because of the landslide. We are now trying to divert the traffic through the Pune Corridor. We hope to clear the mud in eight hours as the restoration work is going on in full swing."
On an average, 16,000 cars travel everyday on the Mumbai-Pune Express Highway.
