The President is expected to have a stopover at Udhampur on May 2 before visiting the Northern Command headquarters the next day.

Kalam had become the first-ever President to visit Siachen earlier in April when he met armed forces personnel and had a first hand view of the duties being discharged by them while in the difficult terrain.

In June 2003, he had made his first trip to the LoC at Uri during his visit to Jammu and Kashmir. He had then travelled to Jammu, Udhampur, Srinagar, Leh as well as Uri.
