The Congress of Racial Equality and Fellowship of Reconciliation organised an interracial bus ride across the United States to test a 1946 decision of the Supreme Court, which declared segregation on interstate buses unconstitutional. Called the Freedom Ride, it failed to elicit much attention.
But a similar idea back in 1961 had attracted wide attention, and also violence against the participants, who were mostly student activists who rode buses from Washington, DC, to Montgomery in Alabama.
