Dussehra, also called Vijayadashami, is celebrated to mark the victory of Lord Ram over the demon king Ravan.

Ramlila -- a folk theatre enactment of Ram's life -- is held during Navratri (the festival of nine nights), which precedes Dussehra. On the tenth day, cracker-filled effigies of Ravan, his brother Kumbhakarn, and son Meghnad are set alight to celebrate the victory of good over evil.
