On Thursday, you saw the senior doyen of the Banaras gharana in action, Ustad Bismillah Khan, the sultan of the shehnai. Others who performed at Banaras Utsav 2003 in Mumbai on October 2 included Girija Devi, perhaps the finest vocalist from the Banaras Gharana.

'When in full flow, her voice, with its resonance and timbre, sonorously recaptures the rich melodiousness of a shehnai,' notes a tribute on the ITC Sangeet Research Academy web site. 'Her scintillating performances reveal her sensitivity, erudition and versatility as a vocalist. Endowed with a divine magic in the depths of her voice, every recital of hers blesses her listeners with a sense of profound fulfillment.'
