Women's Bill will take rebirth: PM

May 08, 2003 17:55 IST

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Thursday assured several women MPs from the Rajya Sabha that the Women's Reservation Bill had not been buried.

According to nominated member Shabana Azmi, Vajpayee gave this assurance when agitated women members confronted him in the lobby soon after Question Hour.

When the members protested against the 'burial' of the bill envisaging 33 per cent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, Azmi quoted Vajpayee as quipping, "Punarjanam hoga" (it will take rebirth).

Earlier, the members led by Sarla Maheswari of the CPI-M had sought to draw Vajpayee's attention to the issue in the House, but he left prompting them to follow suit.
