A massive manhunt has been launched by the Manipur police to trace a German national abducted by suspected Kuki militants.

Police sources in capital Imphal said Heinrich Wolfgang has been missing since Sunday.

Local newspaper reports said the abductors -- suspected to be militants of the Kuki Liberation Army -- have demanded Rs 10 million (Rs one crore) for his release.

Heinrich Wolfgang had arrived in Manipur along with a German lady identified as Edda Kirlies on March 21 at the invitation of the United NGO Mission to monitor the activities of German-funded NGOs in the state.

Last Sunday March 23, Wolfgang accompanied officials of the Fraternal Green Care/Volunteers For Village Development to inspect the progress of a project being undertaken near Maphou dam and to address a training programme.

As the group was approaching Maphou dam at about 1420 IST,  it was waylaid near Moirang Purel by suspected KLA cadres who abducted Wolfgang.

Kirlies had not accompanied the group.

It may be noted that the NGO Fraternal Green Care/Volunteers for Village Development was formed after a Naga-Kuki carnage in the early nineties to promote peace and harmony.
