At least 11 people were killed on Tuesday in a slew of landslides in West Bengal's Darjeeling district, police said.
District Superintendent of Police Sanjay Chander told reporters that seven of the deaths occurred in the Gayabari area of Darjeeling Hills, which had received heavy rainfall in the past 24 hours.
Efforts by rescue workers to clear debris in Gayabari were hampered by inclement weather.
The hill resort of Darjeeling and other far-flung parts of the district have been virtually cut off from the rest of the state.
Mudslides had also been reported on National Highway 31 that connects Sikkim to the rest of the country. But, no casualty had been reported.
An incessant downpour in the northern districts of Cooch Behar and Jalpaiguri had also created a flood-like situation. Several rivers, including the Teesta and Raidak, were flowing above their danger mark.
