Two retired generals in race for J&K governorship

January 28, 2003 19:27 IST

Two former army chiefs are in the race for the post of Jammu and Kashmir governor, sources said in New Delhi on Tuesday.

The term of the incumbent, Girish Chandra Saxena, ends in March this year.

The names doing rounds are of General S F Rodrigues and General S Padmanabhan, sources said in New Delhi on Tuesday.

The sources said the name of Gen Rodrigues, who was the army chief between 1990 and 1993, has been under consideration for about a year.

The government has not yet found any political face to replace Saxena.

This is the second stint of Saxena as governor. Mufti Mohammed Sayeed had brought him for the first time when he [the Mufti] was the Union home minister in the V P Singh government.
