Dubai deports Ghatkopar blast accused

January 27, 2003 09:11 IST

Dubai authorities on Monday deported Mohammed Altaf, an accused in the Ghatkopar blast case and an alleged activist of the banned Students Islamic Movement of India.

Altaf had allegedly supplied explosives and funds to those who triggered the blast in a BEST bus on December 2, 2002.

The Mumbai police will produce him in a special court later in the day.

Altaf is the second accused to be deported from Dubai. Earlier, Irfan Rehman Khan was sent to Mumbai, where he is in police custody.

In all, four persons have so far been arrested in connection with the blast of whom three -- Mohammed Abdul Matin Abdul Basit, Sheikh Mohammed Muzzamil and Zahir Ahmed Bashir Ahmed Sheikh -- are in judicial custody.

Another accused, Sayed Khwaja Yunus Khwaja Ayub, was arrested under the Prevention of Terrorism Act. He reportedly escaped from custody on January 7 when the jeep in which he was being taken to Aurangabad overturned at a village 90km from Pune.
