The Delhi police is all set to introduce Global Positioning System and computers in Police Control Room vehicles.

Increased threats of terrorist attacks have prompted the police to demand 88 PCR vans in addition to the existing 338 vehicles.

The GPS is likely to be introduced within two months, Joint Commissioner of Police (Operations) A S Khan said.

The GPS, which will provide automatic positioning of each PCR van and display it on a screen in the central Police Control Room, will be useful in the pursuit of criminals and terrorists, Khan said.

A computer in the PCR vans will provide details of criminals.

The police will be able to access information not only from the hard disk of the computer in the van, but also from the online link to the computers in the Crime Record Office and through that from POLNET.

A scratch pad in the van will eliminate the use of keyboard for writing messages by telephone operator to wireless operator.

"It will cut short the time taken in writing a message and then carrying it manually to the wireless operator," Khan said, adding that the problem of writing messages in mixed languages will also be eliminated by scratch pads.

Call receiving and distribution will be computerised and connected by a Local Area Network, he said.

Calling Line Identification system will also be introduced to trace the calls made to a PCR. "This is aimed at checking the problem of hoax calls," he said.
