Manipur night curfew relaxed, CM to head delegation to Delhi
January 18, 2003 21:38 IST
Night curfew in Imphal municipal areas has been relaxed by four hours from Saturday night with reports of improvement in the situation even as Chief Minister Okram Ibobo Singh was scheduled to head a delegation to the Union capital on Sunday to ascertain the Centre's stand on Manipur's borders.
The curfew hours would now be from 2000 to 0400 IST from the earlier six-to-six night curfew, official sources said.
The indefinite curfew was clamped on Friday after the state government received reports that rallies and processions were likely to be organised following Thursday night's protests over any possible 'attempt to divide Manipur'.
The state is now calm with securitymen and police deployed at all vulnerable and important points, the sources
said.
The 18-member delegation from Manipur would comprise senior political leaders. It would call on Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and other central leaders to seek clarifications in view of the Naga peace talks between the Centre and the NSCN (I-M) leadership, the sources said.
Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Saturday told reporters in Dibrugarh that his government would oppose the NSCN (I-M) proposal to include parts of Assam in 'Greater Nagaland'.
