A fresh cold wave on Friday evening killed 39 more people in Uttar Pradesh where, in some place, temperature plummeted to 0 degree Celsius.

With this the number of deaths on account of the chill over the past three weeks touched 233.

Meteorological office chief R K Verma said, "The lowest temperature was recorded in Kanpur, where mercury dipped to an all–time low of 0 degree Celsius, followed by Allahabad where it stood at 0.4 degree Celsius."

He said, "Varanasi recorded a minimum temperature of 1.8 degree Celsius, while it went as low as 2 degree Celsius in Lucknow."

Seven pavement-dwellers died in Kanpur and one in Lucknow.

A spokesman of the state home department said, "Five deaths were reported from Mirzapur and Mathura, three in Allahabad and Firozabad, and two each in Mahoba, Banda, Pratapgarh and Etah. One each were killed in Fatehpur, Faizabad, Farrukhabad, Hardoi, Unnao, Mainpuri and Bahraich over the past 24 hours."

The overcast sky and thick fog continued to disrupt air, rail and road traffic in large parts of the state. Some flights were cancelled while most of the trains ran several hours behind schedule.
