January 09, 2003 05:32 IST

Sixteen Indian fishermen, who allegedly strayed into the Pakistan's territorial waters off Karachi, have been arrested along with their boats.

They came to within 65 nautical miles of the Karachi coast, Pakistan's maritime officials said.

All the detained fishermen were from Gujarat state, taking the number of those arrested by Pakistani to over 400.

Despite periodic decisions by India and Pakistan to free the detained fishermen, the numbers on both sides continues to rise as the fishermen involuntarily stray into the waters of each other because of the absence of proper markers.
