Shaken by the killing of traffic sergeant Bapi Sen by five policemen for coming to the rescue of a girl they were trying to molest, the West Bengal government has passed strictures against police personnel.

A notification was sent on Wednesday to the heads of all police barracks asking them to ensure that the personnel adhere to the Bengal Police Regulation Code.

It asked the barrack in-charges to ensure that constables wanting to go out sought permission from their superiors, Deputy Inspector General of Police Narayan Chandra Ghosh said in Kolkata.

The accused cops, who were drunk, were in a taxi on new year's eve when they spotted the woman, who was riding pillion on a motorcycle.

They forced the bike to stop and reportedly tried to drag the woman into their cab.

Sen, passing through the area with two other friends, intervened, rescued the girl and sent her and her friend away. The enraged policemen then assaulted Sen and left him bleeding on the road.

An embarrassed state government tried to pass off the incident as 'isolated' and offered a job to a member of Sen's family.
