9 killed after gunmen open
fire outside Karachi mosque

February 23, 2003 22:57 IST

Violence broke out on Sunday when the funeral procession of two of the nine persons killed when gunmen opened fire outside a mosque in Karachi, Pakistan was being taken out.

Several thousands gathered in the mosque to mourn the dead and some of them targetted vehicles and shops on the route the funeral procession took.

Saturday's incident occurred outside the Imam Bargha Mehdi mosque just after the call for evening prayers.

The toll would have been higher but for the mosque doors being shut from inside immediately after the shooting broke out.

Sectarian violence is suspected to be the cause of the incident as the mosque is frequented by Shias who have a running feud with the majority Sunni Muslims.
