France, Belgium veto US demand for
NATO support over Iraq: official

February 10, 2003 16:06 IST

France and Belgium on Monday vetoed the US' demand for NATO support on its stand on Iraq, news agencies said quoting NATO officials.

The issue had created divisions in the military alliance with France, Germany and Belgium raising their voice against the US request for NATO to start logistical planning over Iraq.

France raised objections under a 'silence procedure' invoked by NATO chief George Robertson on Thursday in a bid to force an agreement.

Under the procedure, the US request would have been considered approved if none of the 19 members countries had raised objections till 0900 GMT (1430 IST) on Monday.
