DMK legislator arrested
at speaker's instance

N Sathiya Moorthy in Chennai | February 01, 2003 11:57 IST

The Chennai police late on Friday night arrested Dravida Munnetra Kazagham legislator and former deputy speaker, Parithi Illamvazhuthi, at the instance of Assembly Speaker K Kalimuthu.

Parithi was picked up from his Santhome residence for threatening Tamil Maanila Kamaraj Congress MLA K Kumaradoss inside the House on Thursday. He has been charged under Sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 506-2 (criminal intimidation).

Acting on a resolution passed by the House, Speaker Kalimuthu had lodged a criminal complaint against Parithi.

The Chennai police, however, is yet to act on a complaint made by Parithi that Kumaradoss too had threatened him both inside and outside the House.

Parithi has charged Kumaradoss under the Civil Rights Act also for allegedly making derogatory references to his caste.

With the budget session of the assembly adjourned sine die on Friday, Speaker Kalimuthu will not have an occasion to present a joint opposition memorandum to the House for its consideration.
