Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday visited Mumbai on Tuesday and condemned the car-bomb attacks near the Gateway of India and Zaveri Bazaar (Kalbadevi), in which over 50 people were killed and scores injured.
"Ever since I was told of the tragedy my thoughts have been with the families of those who have lost their dear ones. This is a terrible tragedy and we condemn it with all the strength at our command," she said.
"Those who have committed this crime must be caught and punished," the Congress president said.
She said the people must make sure that no untoward incidents take place.
"We must do all we can to maintain peace and amity. The government must be alert and do all it can to make sure such tragedies do not take place."
Gandhi later visited the three hospitals -- JJ, St George's and GT -- where the injured were admitted.
Later at the Gateway, Gandhi said the state government is making all efforts to coordinate with central agencies and catch the guilty.
Asked if the Congress government takes responsibility for the deteriorating law and order situation in the state, she said terrorism is menace that the entire country will have to face together.
The state government, she assured, will see to it that such tragedies do not recur.
