Hurriyat leaders will not meet Vohra

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar | April 24, 2003 15:33 IST

The All Parties Hurriyat Conference on Thursday said it would not meet Centre's interlocutor N N Vohra, who is currently on a weeklong visit to Kashmir.

"We want a permanent resolution of the Kashmir problem. Vohra has neither the power nor the mandate to solve the problem. We have decided in our executive meeting not to talk to Vohra," said Hurriyat chairman Abdul Gani Bhat.

"We want unconditional talks; we want talks at the highest level and talks with only those who challenge the accession [of Kashmir to India]," said Hurriyat leader and chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front, Yasin Malik, at a press conference after the executive meeting.

"Vohra is talking to the so-called true representatives of the state. Let him talk to them... even these pro-Indian leaders are saying that Vohra should talk to the APHC."

Former Hurriyat chairman Mirwaiz Umer Farooq said, "We have from time to time come up with positive suggestions as to how the problem can be solved. When we talk about the problems of the Kashmiri people, we have to take into account the complexities of the Indian and Pakistani governments."

He said, "We had suggested that if India does not like tripartite talks, we can have a triangular approach in which all the three parties, that is India, Pakistan and the Kashmiri people, can talk. After that the concerned parties will meet to reach a final settlement of the problem."
