After trishul, moves to stop RSS shakhas
on government land in Rajasthan

April 23, 2003 11:21 IST

After banning distribution of tridents, the Rajasthan government is setting the stage for another confrontation with the Sangh Parivar on the issue of holding RSS shakhas on government land.

Although no formal order has been issued, the administration is being alerted to stop the practice of allowing RSS shakhas on government land, including school playgrounds, public parks and forest land, Home Minister Gulab Singh Shekhawat said in Jaipur on Wednesday.

"We are asking the officials at the lower level to ensure that the RSS is not allowed to hold its shakhas in premises of government schools and other public places," he added.

Forest Minister Bina Kak has also asked officials of her department not to permit RSS shakhas on forest land and the Ashok Vihar garden in Jaipur, which has been developed by her department.

A RSS spokesman, however, said since no formal written order had been issued by the state government as yet, the shakhas would continue to be held at their present locations.

"It is another move by the Congress government to appease Muslims to garner their votes in the coming assembly elections," he charged.
