"India is a great country. It is special for us," said Chalabi. "Democracy in India is a marvel of civilization. We hope to have a political system similar to India's. India also developed on her own and achieved great technological advancement. I am devoted to India and would like to visit India soon."
The road to set up a proper democratic system in Iraq is expected to be completed in less than two years. "[Major] General [Jay] Garner will come in to restore basic services," he said. "The interim government will also draft the constitution and get it discussed in a constituent assembly. People will vote in a referendum. Elections will also take place."
Chalabi denied being in the race for any leadership position. He claimed to be more interested in building institutions of civil society so that a firm foundation is set for democracy in Iraq and said his role in active politics is almost over. Asked what would happen if the Iraqis elect him their leader, he said, "That is a hypothetical question."
