Identity of Abu Salem established 'scientifically': CBI chief

The Central Bureau of Investigation on Monday rejected Abu Salem's lawyer's claim that the man arrested in Lisbon was not the Mumbai underworld don, saying it has been 'scientifically proved' he was indeed the gangster.

"It has been scientifically proven. His fingerprints have been matched. The police in Portugal has established his identity and informed us," CBI Director P C Sharma said.

He was commenting on a report from Lisbon quoting a lawyer of Salem that the man arrested recently there was a Pakistani national and not Salem and that the documents he held were genuine.

Rejecting reports that the prosecutor general of Portugal had said Salem could not be deported, he said, "Our team has held discussions with him. He has not told us that he [Salem] will not be deported."

He said the CBI team was holding parleys with investigating agencies in Lisbon to ascertain the legal and other procedures for deportation of Salem. "We have been receiving excellent cooperation from the Portuguese authorities."

Asked whether the CBI team would bring him back, Sharma said, 'it is difficult to say' but the team would be there for another three days for discussions with Portuguese authorities.

To a question on capital punishment in India, a provision which Portugal may find difficult to accept for deportation of Salem, the CBI chief said, "There is also a provision in our law to reduce capital punishment."
