Fire in TN cracker unit; eight killed

N Sathiya Moorthy in Chennai

Eight women were killed when a fire broke out in a private fireworks manufacturing unit near Kovilpatti town in Tamil Nadu on Tuesday.

While six people died on the spot, two succumbed to injuries while being taken to hospital.

Police are investigating the cause of the fire, which led to an explosion of crackers in the unit that employs at least 80 women.

The local units of two communist parties have demanded compensation for the families of the dead and injured.
