Provide security to minorities: K P S Gill to Gujarat government

The former director general of the Punjab police, K P S Gill, on Tuesday night asked the Gujarat government to provide security to minorities in the wake of the attack on the Akshardham temple in Gandhinagar.

"An important task of the state government at this juncture is to ensure protection to the minorities," Gill said, observing that all steps must be taken to see that the atmosphere does not get surcharged. He said this was all the more important as television channels were broadcasting the incident live.

Keeping in view the sensitive situation, curfew should be imposed around the temple complex to prevent any kind of slogan-shouting, as it could take a "dangerous turn", Gill, who was the security adviser to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, told Aaj Tak news channel.

He said intercepts of wireless communication had indicated the possibility of a terrorist strike in the state.

Reports had also suggested that Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence had asked its operatives in Jammu and Kashmir to go to Gujarat and create terror, Gill said.

He said the security forces, while carrying out operations in the temple, should ensure that the complex suffered very little damage.

Asked if there was any intelligence failure, he said it was difficult for the state agencies to have specific information of terrorist plans, especially when they were hatched outside the country.
