Pan-Tamil militant held for robbery, killings

The Perambalur district police in Tamil Nadu arrested Seetharaman, a pan-Tamil militant, on Monday, in connection with the murder of at least six car drivers and the theft of their vehicles.

According to the police, Seetharaman, a renegade militant, had resorted to waylaying lonely car drivers, after abductions and gangsterism failed to bring in enough money.

The police became suspicious after three bodies of drivers were accidentally recovered from a jungle in Perambalur district. Investigations led them to Seetharaman and two others.

They said Seetharaman was probably involved in six other killings and they were investigating such cases in the Perambalur, Cuddalore, and Thanjavur districts to ascertain this.

The police had recently formed a special team to investigate the frequent disappearances of car drivers in the three districts.

In the past, gangs operating in the jungles of Perambalur and Cuddalore districts were known to pick up trucks and their drivers from across the state and bring them there for extortion. Lately, cars, particularly Tata Sumos being run as local taxis, are said to have been the targets.
