Shift Geelani to J&K jail: High court

The Jammu and Kashmir high court on Thursday directed the state government to shift senior Jamaat-e-Islami leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani, currently lodged in Birsa Munda Central Jail in Ranchi, to a prison in J&K within a week.

"In view of the law, all detainees who are permanent residents of Jammu and Kashmir shall not be lodged in jails outside the state," Justice Muzaffar Jan said.

Geelani and his son-in-law were arrested on June 9 following a joint raid carried out by the police and income tax officials at nine places in Kashmir valley, including the residence of the Hurriyat executive member.
