Jayalalithaa being blackmailed by BJP: Gehlot

Defending Congress president Sonia Gandhi's right to become the prime minister of the country, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Tuesday alleged that his Tamil Nadu counterpart J Jayalalithaa was being blackmailed by the Bharatiya Janata Party to launch a tirade against the Congress chief.

"Jayalalithaa, involved in several cases of corruption, is feeling insecure and fearful and wants to come out of the tricky situation. Therefore, she is being blackmailed by the BJP," Gehlot said.

"In Indian democracy it is the people of the country who decide as to who would be the next prime minister. The Congress does not need any certificate from Jayalalithaa or from anybody else," he said.

According to Gehlot the BJP and other anti-Congress parties were trying to rake up the issue of foreign origin of Sonia, already settled by the court and the people several times, at this juncture because under her leadership the Congress had strengthened its mass base.
