Rains lash Chennai

N Sathiya Moorthy in Chennai

Rains lashed Chennai on Wednesday morning impeding workers and students en-route to their offices and schools.

It flooded low-lying areas particularly in the northern suburbs of the city.

The rains lasted over three hours and is the first major downpour for the city after the northeast monsoon set in this year.

The rains are the only source of potable water for Chennai.

Fresh rains have also been reported in the Thanjavur delta and the intermediate lower catchment areas of the Mettur reservoir.

It has been raining continuously for the last fortnight in other parts of Tamil Nadu.

Meanwhile, the toll in the rains has gone up to 13.
