Kalam gets job for terror victim's 14-year-old son

N Sathiya Moorthy in Chennai

President A P J Abdul Kalam has ordered the Tamil Nadu government to employ the 14-year-old son of a terror victim in Tirunelvelli district.

The presidential initiative follows an appeal from the family of Abu Backer of Melapalayam, who was killed by terrorists in 1997.

Backer's widow makes a living by rolling beedies for contractors. She had appealed for assistance to the President, prime minister and the chief minister.

Moved by the family's plight, Kalam ordered the state government to employ her son, Mydeen Fasid, in the Tirunelvelli taluk office.

Fasid recalled: "My father owned a shop, which was our only source of income. But after terrorists lynched him we lost everything."

"Even if I am a small boy, I will do whatever is required of me."

Though Fasid is a minor he can be employed under presidential instructions.
