Madras high court orders compensation to newsmen

N Sathiya Moorthy in Chennai

The Madras high court on Friday ordered 'adequate compensation' to newsmen and their camera crew for the damage suffered when policemen attacked them during the course of a Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam rally in Chennai on August 12 last year.

The DMK men were protesting the midnight arrest of party president and former Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi.

Justice K Kanagaraj, disposing of a petition by nine Chennai-based journalists, also directed the one-man judicial commission, headed by retired high court Judge K Bhaktavatsalam, appointed to probe the journalists' charges, to submit its report to the state government within a week.

The journalists have boycotted the commission, protesting the terms of reference, which included rules for newsmen covering rallies and demonstrations.
