Tamil Nadu Congress to have 'jumbo team'

N Sathiya Moorthy in Chennai

The Congress high command has announced a 'jumbo team' for its Tamil Nadu unit in the light of the merger of the Tamil Maanila Congress with the parent organisation in August.

The list will address the interests of various groups in the party, All India Congress Committee secretary Ramesh Chennithala said after releasing the list in New Delhi.

The new set-up will have 18 vice-presidents, 23 general secretaries, 36 secretaries and 36 organising secretaries. It will also have a 440-member general council.

The list contains a 21-member state executive committee, a 25-member political affairs committee, and a 14-member disciplinary action committee. In all, it has the names of 46 members from the state and the AICC general council.

Earlier, Congress president Sonia Gandhi had named a twin-level leadership in the state when she made S Balakrishnan the Tamil National Congress Committee president and incumbent state Congress chief E V K S Elangovan the working president.

The new list allows TMC treasurer R Sudarsanam to continue in the post. The TMC faction has around 45 per cent of all posts, which includes presidents of 54 Congress district units.

Existing factions within the Congress have been allotted the remaining 55 per cent positions.
