Congress misled nation on release of prisoners: BJP

The Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday stepped up its attack on the Congress accusing the party and its president Sonia Gandhi of misleading the nation on the release of terrorists by the Jammu and Kashmir government.

"The Congress president and the party should apologise to the nation for misleading it on the Jammu and Kashmir government releasing terrorists without consulting the Centre or the intelligence agencies after claiming that it had done so," BJP spokesman V K Malhotra told reporters.

The party condemned the Congress for defending the statement by People's Democratic Party vice-president Mehbooba Mufti who had said that India should not interfere in the affairs of Jammu and Kashmir.

"The statement by Mehbooba Mufti is anti-national and the Congress by supporting it also puts itself in the same position as the PDP. This stand of the Congress is highly condemnable," he said.

Malhotra said the Congress was now attempting to woo the minorities in Gujarat by such moves in Jammu and Kashmir as "it has realised that it would not get any Hindu votes in the coming assembly election".
