Vajpayee's position as PM
very secure: Brajesh Mishra

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's position is 'very secure' as far as the prime ministership is concerned, his Principal Secretary Brajesh Mishra told Tim Sebastian in an interview to BBC World's Hard Talk programme.

On how secure is his position as National Security Adviser given the number of 'enemies' he appears to have made, Mishra shot back, "I don't think I have made enemies."

To another question if a number of people wanted him out, he said, "I wouldn't say there are a lot of people who want me out of the job, and there are some people who would rather not see me where I am, but I will go whenever the prime minister wants me to go."

On his influence on the prime minister, Mishra said "I implement the policies that he tells me to implement."

Dismissing the suggestion that the Centre did nothing to stop the violence in Gujarat, Mishra said the government had condemned it and the prime minister himself had said it's a blot on the nation.

Also, "although the violence was on a large scale in Gujarat, it did not spread to other parts of the country," he pointed out.

Why was it allowed to happen? Sebastian asked.

"It was not allowed to happen. It was not the Centre that allowed it to happen," was Mishra's reply.

During the interview, Mishra denied the prime minister had at any point said that the Modi government should go.
