25 people reportedly lose vision after operation in Ludhiana

Twenty-five people have reportedly lost vision after being operated upon at a 'Free Eye Camp' at Nanaksar Kaleran village in Ludhiana district.

The camp was organised by two charitable organisations, the Lions Club and the Baba Nand Singh Baba Ishar Singh hospital on the eve of Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti.

The first case of eyesight lost was reported in the civil hospital 25 days after the operation.

Most of the victims are in their sixties and seven of them were confirmed blind by the doctors of the Jagraon civil hospital.

The victims who have lost their sight include Malkiat Singh, Sat Pal Singh, Harnam Singh, Krishan Lal, Jaswinder Singh, Naseeb Kaur, Sita Rani [all residents of Jagraon].

According to reports 250 patients were registered at the camp, of which more than 100 were operated by a team of doctors headed by Dr Dhanwant Singh, a known eye surgeon of the state.

Dr S N Tewari, Civil Surgeon [Ludhiana], on Monday said that he had ordered an enquiry into the entire episode. He refused to give any further details.

The three-member team of doctors consisting of Dr J M Singh [Senior Medical Officer - Eye Mobile], Dr Inderjit Singh Bagga and Dr Manjit Singh [Civil Hospital, Ludhiana] has been asked to submit their enquiry report at the earliest.
