PMK president Mani surrenders

N Sathiya Moorthy in Chennai

Pattali Makkal Katchi president and legislature group leader G K Mani surrendered before Metropolitan Magistrate R Munirathinam in Chennai on Monday. The Madras high court has initiated a suo moto case against him accusing him of disturbing a meeting of the Chengalvaraya Naicker Trust.

Nine of the 12 accused in the case were arrested on October 4.

Mani has been remanded to judicial custody till December 5, as the court rejected his anticipatory bail application last week.

The high court ordered criminal proceedings against the 12 after the trust chairman, retired judge A Thangamani, submitted his resignation. The PMK group was protesting against Thangamani, a non-Vanniar, and other non-Vanniar members continuing as members of the trust.

The high court has also initiated proceedings against PMK founder S Ramadoss in the matter. Unlike the 11 other accused, Ramadoss was not present at the trust meeting when it was disturbed.
