Violence cannot stall dialogue process: Mufti

Mukhtar Ahmad In Srinagar

Violence cannot stall the process of talks between the Centre and elected representatives of Jammu and Kashmir, Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed said on Sunday.

"Enough blood has been spilled in the past 13 years and now is the time to have a serious and meaningful dialogue to address the problem," the Mufti said while addressing a function in Srinagar.

The Mufti reached Srinagar in the morning to take stock of the overall situation in the state following a spurt in violence in the past two days.

He headed a meeting of officers of the police and paramilitary forces.

"I am committed to return to the state peace with dignity," the chief minister said, but cautioned "against forces that will try to sabotage the efforts."

"We won't allow the process to get derailed. My government will bring the people, particularly the youth, out of the atmosphere of hopelessness and usher them into an era of peace and prosperity.

"The task ahead of us is stupendous and the challenges enormous, but our determination is equally strong. The sincerity of purpose will lead us to the goal.

"The Congress... attaches importance to initiating a dialogue in order to address the problem that has left the state bleeding," he said.

The Mufti said that the National Democratic Alliance government at the Centre, too, had offered unconditional dialogue to militants. "The process of dialogue will take some time to get going and the government will concentrate on providing good governance to ameliorate the suffering."

The Mufti asked the administration to be "responsive to the public grievances and work with missionary zeal".

He said procedures had to be simplified so that people were not put to inconvenience.
