Miss World pageant pulled out of Nigeria, to be held in London now

The Miss World pageant will now be held in London, after organisers cancelled the event in Nigeria following widespread violence in Kaduna over a newspaper report that left about 100 people dead and over 500 injured.

The pageant will be held in the British capital on December 7. The organisers said the decision to change the venue was "in the overall interests of Nigeria and the contestants".

The rioting, which started in Kaduna on Wednesday, spread to the Nigerian capital of Abuja on Friday, where the contest was scheduled to be held.

The brief announcement by the organisers pulling out the event from Nigeria did not elaborate on their decision

Islamic groups in Nigeria have complained for months that beauty pageants promote promiscuity.
