Delhi police arrests four in connection with rape of medical student

Onkar Singh in New Delhi

The Delhi police has arrested four persons in connection with last week's rape of a student of the Maulana Azad Medical College.

"The accused persons are Rahul Buddhprakash (20), his brother Amit Buddhprakash (18), and their two neighbours Neeraj (14) and Sooraj (14)," Police Commissioner R S Gupta on Friday.

"These boys, who lived in nearby jhuggis in the Delhi Gate area, where lying in wait at the Khooni Darwaza across the college for the girl around noon of November 15. They caught the victim unaware and pushed her inside the monument. While three took her upstairs and committed the crime at knifepoint, one stood below maintaining guard. It was a case of rape-cum-robbery. We have also recovered a mobile phone, a small purse and a Rs 100 note that had been stolen from the girl's purse," he said.

On Thursday Rahul had approached the Tis Hazari court alleging that the police had threatened to implicate him in the case.

However, Gupta claimed that Rahul had confessed during interrogation and at his instance they had arrested the other three.

Gupta declined to say if the victim had identified the four.

Rahul was facing trial in two cases of burglary, in which both Amit and Suraj were his accomplices, he said.

"They are all school dropouts. Amit is an illiterate. They belong to low income group with ostensibly no means of livelihood," the police chief said.
