NRI Sikh awarded religious punishment

Mohinder Singh, a US resident for the last 20 years, was awarded exemplary punishment by the Akal Takht when he appeared before it in Amritsar on Monday.

Singh, who has been ex-communicated from the panth, appeared before the Akal Takht with a request for exoneration.

Singh was directed to dust devotees' shoes, clean utensils in the community kitchen of the Golden Temple, listen to religious hymns and sweep the periphery of the temple for 15 days.

He will have to devote an hour to each all these activities daily for 15 days, the Akal Takht said in its edict.

Mohinder Singh was ex-communicated in 1998 by the then Akal Takht jathedar Bhai Ranjit Singh for showing disrespect to the Sikh scriptures.

An edict was issued against Mohinder Singh in the US on November 11, 1998 requiring him to submit a clarification before the Akal Takht for "misinterpretation [of] and assigning wrong meanings" to the scriptures.

On his failure to appear before the Akal Takht, Mohinder Singh was excommunicated.

After completion of his punishment, Singh would have to appear before the Takht with an offering of Rs 101 and a bowl of sweets.
