Dalit woman paraded half-naked over land dispute in Bihar

Anand Mohan Sahay in Patna

A 45-year-old dalit woman was paraded half-naked in Kishanganj town in Bihar by a group of people who wanted to teach a lesson to her family for not giving away their claim over a piece of land.

Bharati Devi, wife of Amarnath Das and a resident of Dharmganj locality of Kishanganj district, was assaulted and paraded half-naked by a group of people annoyed with the couple over their long-standing dispute over a piece of land.

The fear-stricken dalit woman has lodged an FIR with the Kishanganj police station last week against those who had beaten and paraded her.

In her statement to police, she stated that a group of about eight persons, including some women, forcibly broke open her room on November 3, abused and assaulted her.

Afterwards, they grabbed her neck and dragged her outside, parading her half-naked with hardly any clothes on.

The district police, however, are yet to make any arrests in this connection.

Kishanganj district Superintendent of police P S K Singhal denied that the woman was paraded half naked by a group of people. "Her story is not at all true, it is bullshit and concocted," he said. But he admitted that the dalit couple was physical tortured and tormented.

The police attributed Devi's assault to the long-standing and extremely complicated land dispute between two groups who are involved in a string of cases and counter-cases.
