J&K police disbands Special Police Officer post

The Jammu and Kashmir police has decided to discontinue with the services of Special Police Officers in the state after receiving a number of complaints against them, a police spokesman said on Friday.

As many as 165 SPOs have been relieved in Srinagar district alone, while a similar process has been undertaken in other districts as well, the spokesman said.

He said most of the SPOs were not performing their assigned task of providing intelligence information that could have strengthened hands of the police in the fight against terrorism, the spokesman said.

The SPOs were engaged in 1990 on a monthly honorarium of Rs1500.
