NHRC justifies stand in Ansal Plaza case

Justifying its stand on the Ansal Plaza shootout case, the National Human Rights Commission on Thursday attributed some "intemperate" media observations in this connection to "ignorance of correct position of law."

The commission said its decision to ask the Delhi police to submit a report on the alleged encounter, in which two Pakistani militants were killed, was in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution.

The NHRC acted on a complaint filed by member of Parliament Kuldip Nayar and journalist Praful Bidwai.

In a statement issued after a meeting chaired by its chairman and former chief justice of India, J S Verma, the commission said: "It is unfortunate that some intemperate observations have appeared in media reports, commenting on cognisance of this matter having been taken by the commission in the normal course. Such remarks betray an ignorance of the correct position under our Constitution and the laws, and more disturbingly, depict a degree of intolerance inconsistent with the principles of our democratic polity."

On the report filed by the Delhi police on the shootout case, the commission said it would deal with it "in the coming days."

Meanwhile, Hari Krishna, who claims have witnessed the alleged encounter, and a lawyer on Thursday filed separate petitions in the Delhi high court seeking a probe by an independent agency into the incident.

While Krishna has sought a probe either by the NHRC or a judge of the high court, Advocate C S Rathour has sought an inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation.
